Larkspurs are delicate flowers.
I was always mesmerised by their astonishing violet blue as we walked down the flower laden isles of the 5am flower market when we were children. The market used to be set up in a parking lot before the office crowd would arrive. A bright spot bang in the middle of the built environment. Colour vs concrete.
As I subsequently learnt, Larkspurs shed petals quickly, or at least that’s how they responded to the weather in Delhi. Maybe it was just the fact that they were trapped in a vase.
My mum knew this already of course, but she bought them anyway. Perhaps it was my yearning gaze?
I remember seeing them in the morning sun, a heap of illuminated blue petals settled around the vase atop our stone dining table. A delicate little wreath. The deep gold flecks in the granite would catch the light too, making the picture even more ethereal.
Larkspur SR26 is an abstraction of that memory shared through an effervescence of brilliant blues, dancing together in soft yet highly expressive curves created by patchwork in linen.
The flower market has moved further away in the last decade - possibly too far to visit now early in the morning, but it will always stay with me in the version that I remember. And as I see it, a memory can be the beginning of something new rather than the end of something that has been.
